The Teavana blending standard — what goes into every tin

Every Teavana tea — from Jade Citrus Mint to Maharaja Chai Oolong — is engineered around three specifications: large-leaf integrity, whole-ingredient inclusions, and a documented brew profile. No shortcuts, no fannings, no filler dust.

Whole-leaf grade sourcing

We build each Teavana blend on OP-grade whole leaves and orthodox rolled teas — not CTC cuts or tea bag dust. Larger leaves release flavor more slowly, giving Jade Citrus Mint its clean finish and Royal English Breakfast its full malty body.

Leaf Grade · OP / Orthodox

Real botanicals & fruit inclusions

Peach Tranquility is built with real freeze-dried peach and candied pineapple. Hibiscus Spice uses whole hibiscus petals. You can see and smell each ingredient before you brew — no artificial “flavor powder” coating anonymous leaf.

Inclusions · Whole & Freeze-Dried

Documented brew profile per blend

Every Teavana tea ships with an exact spec: water temperature, steep time, and leaf-to-water ratio. Chai Oolong pulls at 195°F, Emperor’s Clouds and Mist opens at 175°F, and Matcha whisks with hotter water. Repeatable, every time.

Spec Sheet · On Every Package

From leaf to cup in four steps

Our brewing method is deliberately simple. Follow these four steps for a consistent Teavana cup, whether you’re steeping Chamomile Mint Blossom before bed or Samurai Chai Mate at sunrise.

1

Pick your blend

Choose a Teavana tea by mood: energize with Jade Citrus Mint, wind down with Peach Tranquility, or spice things up with Maharaja Chai Oolong.

2

Measure the leaf

Use 1 heaping teaspoon of loose leaf tea per 8 oz cup, or one Teavana sachet. Fruit-heavy herbals like Youthberry can take a slightly larger scoop.

3

Match water & time

175°F for green and white, 195°F for oolong, 206–212°F for black, chai and herbal. Steep 3–5 minutes based on the tin’s spec sheet.

4

Strain & enjoy

Remove the leaves at the target steep time. Enjoy hot, or double-strength over ice for a Teavana iced tea. Most blends re-steep once for a lighter cup.

How Teavana teas fit into your setup

Whether you steep with a French press, an electric kettle, or a variable-temp brewer, Teavana loose leaf teas and tea bags are designed to work with the equipment you already own.

  • Loose leaf infusersAll Teavana loose leaf teas — Jade Citrus Mint, Emperor’s Clouds and Mist, Earl Grey Crème — brew perfectly in mesh basket infusers with room for the leaves to expand.
  • Sachets & tea bagsPeach Tranquility, Mint Majesty and Chamomile Mint Blossom ship in pyramid sachets — drop directly into any 8–12 oz mug.
  • Variable-temp kettlesMatch the on-tin spec: 175°F for green, 195°F for oolong, 212°F for herbal and chai. Any programmable kettle works.
  • Iced tea pitchersBrew Passion Tango or Youthberry at double strength and pour over ice — Teavana blends hold their color and don’t turn bitter cold.
  • Matcha bowls & whisksOur Matcha powder is stone-ground for a traditional chawan and bamboo chasen — 1 tsp to 2 oz of 175°F water, whisked to a fine crema.
  • Milk & milk alternativesMaharaja Chai Oolong, Oprah Chai and Royal English Breakfast pair with dairy, oat, almond or soy for lattes without breaking or curdling.

Frequently asked questions about Teavana teas

Answers to the technical brewing, sourcing and product questions we hear most often.

What’s the difference between Teavana loose leaf tea and Teavana tea bags?
Both formats use the same blend recipes, but the loose leaf versions of Teavana teas — like Jade Citrus Mint and Emperor’s Clouds and Mist — use larger, whole leaves that unfurl during steeping and release a fuller, more nuanced cup. Our sachets (pyramid tea bags) contain the same-grade cut leaf and inclusions with slightly reduced surface area, prioritizing convenience. For daily brewing, sachets are ideal; for tasting the full character of a blend, we recommend loose leaf with a mesh infuser.
What temperature should I use to brew each type of Teavana tea?
Water temperature is the single biggest factor in a good cup. Use 175°F (80°C) for green teas like Jade Citrus Mint, Matcha and Emperor’s Clouds and Mist to avoid bitterness. Use 180–190°F (82–88°C) for white teas and Youthberry. Use 195°F (90°C) for oolong teas including Maharaja Chai Oolong. Use a full 206–212°F (97–100°C) boil for black teas (Earl Grey Crème, Royal English Breakfast), chai blends (Samurai Chai Mate, Oprah Chai) and all herbal teas including Chamomile Mint Blossom, Peach Tranquility and Mint Majesty. A variable-temperature kettle makes this effortless.
How long should I steep Teavana teas?
Steep times are printed on every tin, but general guidance: green teas 2–3 minutes, oolong 3–4 minutes, black tea 3–4 minutes, chai 4–5 minutes, and herbal blends 5–7 minutes. Fruit-forward herbals like Peach Tranquility and Youthberry benefit from the longer end of the range so the fruit inclusions fully hydrate. Over-steeping a green tea produces astringency; over-steeping a herbal only intensifies flavor without bitterness.
Which Teavana teas are caffeine-free?
All of our pure herbal blends are naturally caffeine-free, including Chamomile Mint Blossom, Peach Tranquility, Mint Majesty, Harmonic Mint, Hibiscus Spice, Passion Tango, Chamomile Blush, Lavender Crème, Citrus Lavender, Lemon Ginger Bliss and Winterberry. Youthberry is a white tea blend and contains low caffeine. Green teas (Jade Citrus Mint, Matcha, Emperor’s Clouds and Mist) contain moderate caffeine, and black teas plus chai blends contain the most. Every product page lists the caffeine level.
Can I brew Teavana teas as iced tea or cold brew?
Yes — most Teavana blends make excellent iced tea. For the hot-brew-over-ice method, use 1.5× the normal amount of leaf, steep at the standard temperature for the standard time, then pour immediately over a full glass of ice. Jade Citrus Mint, Passion Tango, Peach Tranquility and Youthberry are especially well-suited to iced preparation. For true cold brew, place 1 tablespoon of loose leaf tea (or 2 sachets) in 32 oz of cold filtered water and refrigerate for 8–12 hours — no bitterness, just a naturally sweet, mellow cup.
How should I store Teavana teas to keep them fresh?
Tea is sensitive to four things: light, heat, moisture and strong odors. Keep your Teavana tins tightly sealed in a cool, dark cabinet — not on the counter next to the stove and not in the refrigerator (condensation ruins leaf integrity). Properly stored, black teas and chai like Earl Grey Crème and Maharaja Chai Oolong stay peak for 18–24 months. Green teas like Jade Citrus Mint and Matcha are more delicate — use within 6–12 months of opening for the brightest flavor. Herbal blends with fruit and botanicals hold well for about 12–18 months.
Can Teavana teas be re-steeped?
Most whole-leaf Teavana teas will give you a solid second infusion, and some — particularly Maharaja Chai Oolong and Emperor’s Clouds and Mist — improve on the second steep as the tightly rolled leaves fully open. For a re-steep, add 30–60 seconds to the original steep time and use fresh, correctly-heated water. Sachets and fruit-heavy herbal blends like Peach Tranquility are best enjoyed as a single infusion, since the fruit inclusions release most of their flavor on the first steep.
